What Everybody Should Know About Moving House

by Mark Walters on September 8, 2010

If you have ever moved, you know how stressful it can be. There are many stages of the move that can cause you stress, ranging from the decision to move in the first place all the way to getting the boxes unpacked in your new home. Part of the stress comes from knowing how much stuff you own that must be moved. If you are not good about cleaning out on a regular basis, you might have quite an accumulation of possessions to move, especially if it has been some time since your last move. Many people look on moving as a way to “downsize” their possessions, and you might want to take your cue from this line of thinking.

One of the single smartest steps you can take towards making your move an easier one is to get organized. Skipping this step turns a tough move into a total nightmare. No matter how busy you may be, finding some time to get organized is simply a must. An organized move might be difficult but the alternative, a chaotic move, should be avoided at all costs!

A side benefit of sorting and organizing your stuff prior to the move is that you discover items you might not realize you still owned. Odds are that if you forgot you had it, you don’t really need it. If it is in good condition, there is the opportunity to donate it to a charity. Or, if you prefer, you can hold a pre-move garage sale and maybe make a few bucks to help cover the cost of the move. If it is not in good condition, the time is right to get rid of it. No matter how you dispose of these unneeded possessions, the good news is that you will have fewer things to pack, move, and unpack in your new home.

If you plan to hire a moving company, the difficult part might be in selecting the right one to help you. Unless you move frequently, and have established a relationship with a particular moving company, the process of hiring a company to do your move can be intimidating. However, it is important to take the time to evaluate the various movers prior to selecting one. You want to be sure that your possessions are handled with care, that nothing is broken or damaged, and that you know everything that left your old house makes its way to your new house.

If you don’t have a relationship with a particular moving company, you might be at a loss as to how to find a reputable one. One way is to ask anyone you know who has moved in the past few years. Getting references from people you know and trust is one of the best ways of finding a good moving company that provides good service, thus making your move easier.
