Recession Woes Bring New Possibilities

by Lisa Udy on December 8, 2009

Family having disagreement in supermarketIf you haven’t heard it seems as though the nation is in a recession.  Seems? Okay, we ARE in a recession, the most brutal recession since the great depression.  It’s tough out there, people are struggling to eat, can’t afford the necessities of times past, and are finding new; more intuitive ways to live. Recession woes are bringing new possibilities to the human persona, and it’s actually refreshing.

If you compare the day you had today to a day you had 3 years ago, what differences would you notice? How conscious are you of your spending habits? Energy consumption? Wastefulness? Are we in need of a recession to correct the basic fundamentals of a happy lifestyle? Maybe, but it sure hurts.

What have you taught yourself about living a not so bloated lifestyle since the recession has affected you? I myself, have learned that, cooking a meal at home and bringing leftovers into work for lunch is more feasible then eating out everyday. Instead of going to Starbucks to get a coffee, it’s more efficient to go to Wal-Wart and buy a small coffee pot, a 5lb. tin of coffee grounds, and a little bit of sugar to satisfy my caffeine needs.

I make sure that I turn down my furnace before I leave for work. I don’t sit in the shower for 15 minutes to wake up in the morning. I find it more relaxing to save money on my heating bill then to relax in a hot steamy tub on a nightly basis. I have started to notice how much these little things add up to big savings, and I’m liking it, a lot.

If you compare your day of yesteryear to the day of today, do you still brag about all the money you can spend? Or is the new competition to show how much money you saved? I like saving money and people today are realizing that everything we needed before is now just a luxury that wasn’t so luxurious.  It’s a great feeling in a bad feeling world.

How has the recession woes created new possibilities for you?

HI Lisa,
SHIFT. There’s been a tidal shift in our thinking. Bigger is NOT Better, efficient is better than “over the top” and if you are trying to sell that 10000 sf house good luck… there are very few buyers. Terry McDonald. I like your theme and writing, why not stop over and we’ll chat?

The recession has sunken pretty close to home here in Eastern Canada as well. Although we have it easy compared to our neighbors in the United States.

Our Oceanfront market is a big part of what I used to do. Now I sell maybe 1 or 2 a year! I have shifted to condos – as the demographics tend towards retirement it just makes sense. The Oceanfront homes have taken a hiatus and will remain to do so for another year or so until people are confident they can really afford such a purchase.
