The government has announced a 30% tax credit on energy efficienct home improvements for 2009 and 2010 up to $1,500. Items that are included are:

Windows and Doors

Insulation – Which is the most cost effective energy efficient home improvement you can make.

Roofs (Metal and Asphalt

HVAC – Heating and Air conditioning

Water Heaters (non-solar)

Biomass Stoves – Stove which heats biomass fuel to heat a home or to heat water.

These credits only apply to a principal residence, no income homes, or vacation properties. Details on what products qualify can be found here: Environmental Protection Agency Energy Star Program. The list will give you the run down on what products, and what requirements you have to meet in order to qualify for the credit.

All the products must be used inside the home, you can’t use the credit for outdoor products that may heat a pool or hot tub. Some of the installation costs will not apply so please check the site to see what will. Make sure any products purchased come with a manufacturers certification statement, a signed statement that says the product qualifies for the tax credit, and keep your receipt for your tax accountant.
